Viktor Frankl's statement, "An abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behavior," reflects his understanding of human psychology under extreme conditions, particularly those he observed during his time in concentration camps during World War II. Frankl, a neurologist and psychiatrist, as well as a Holocaust survivor, was deeply interested in the psychological responses of individuals subjected to severe and life-threatening stressors. In this context, Frankl was referring to the way prisoners in concentration camps, who were subjected to inhumane treatment and existential threats on a daily basis, would react in ways that might seem abnormal under ordinary circumstances.
